Concrete is a product that needs to
be controlled at the design stage. |
| |
After the concrete has been
placed into a structure, failure to comply with the customers
specification becomes a very costly, and potentially dangerous
activity, making it essential to control quality and be certain the
concrete will perform as required. |
Mix design and control of quality must be performed
within the requirements of the relevant standards. The test facility
must work to recognised standards and produce accurate and valid
test data. |
| |
How is this achieved ? |
Laboratory
performance is measured by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service
(U.K.A.S.). Laboratories are required to demonstrate their
management systems, procedures, testing, calibration status of
equipment and production of test results meet their requirements.
Once this is achieved, the test facility is granted U.K.A.S.
accreditation, a Nationally recognised standard of quality. |
The
Concrete Company Technical Department was established during the
early part of 1999. An existing building was fitted out and equipped
to provide a modern test facility for the company. |
The
spacious laboratory is well equipped, with the environment
controlled to enable tests to be carried out within the requirements
of the relevant British Standard. |
The laboratory
was operational by the end of 1999, achieving U.K.A.S.
accreditation during July of the same year. |
Concrete is a product made from many ingredients (by
definition), all of which constantly vary in quality, which in turn
will affect the quality of the concrete they are used to make. Test
results produced by the laboratory are a constant monitoring of
product performance. |
| Any
change in quality is detected by the technical department, and any
necessary action taken to maintain quality before concrete being
supplied to site is put at risk. |
| The
procedures and methods used by the Technical Department are
approved, routinely assessed, and accredited by the Quality Scheme
For Ready Mixed Concrete (Q.S.R.M.C.). The company achieved
Q.S.R.M.C. accreditation in February 2000. |
